Can Medical Cannabis Be Prescribed To Minors?

Mary Jane’s Garden

The issue of medical marijuana for children’s use is still far from a closed matter. It can even be argued that this topic is just getting started. A lot of states in the US have already legalized the use of medical marijuana as long as the disorders are within a list of qualifying conditions. This has led to an influx of dispensaries and online seed sellers selling various medical marijuana to aid in the treatment of various illnesses. Mary Jane’s Garden is an example of a reputable online seed bank legally selling various seeds for home growing.

The acceptance of the maturing public with medical marijuana use is strongly gaining ground. In fact, in some of these states where they consider medical marijuana legal, some states also allow recreational marijuana for individual use. And now comes the debate of whether to allow children and teens access to medical marijuana use. The truth is, yes, some states allow it with very strict guidelines to follow.

But before we delve deeper into the subject let’s try to define and discuss some more issues.

What is Medical marijuana?

Medical Marijuana is a cannabis plant that has been said to contain properties that may heal or aid in healing various physical or mental disorders. It has been made legally available only in states that have legally passed its use. Distribution of this medical cannabis is either thru state allowed local dispensaries or legal online seed banks. They are not available in regular pharmacies or sold by physicians in their offices. Nor are medical cannabis standards for dosage consumption and length of treatment. It will be up to the consulting physician to determine if the patient is already cured or needs further treatment.

Medical marijuana contains a compound that is touted to be the curative agent in this cannabis. This is called CBD or Cannabidiol. This is not the compound that induces the psychoactive effects normally found in other marijuana strains but CBD is said to aid in the treatment of physical and mental disorders. To clarify things, these are not the approved cannabinoid medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Process of Certification

In a nutshell, the process of certification for medical marijuana patients will involve getting a certification from the attending physician that the potential medical marijuana patient requires medical marijuana to treat a specified disorder. This disorder should be in the list of qualifying conditions set by the state to qualify for the medical marijuana program. This certification is presented to a state-created marijuana registry where the request and the individual will be evaluated. This deliberation will result in a certification issued by the registry that that identified patient is qualified to use cannabis for medical purposes. Their names and other pertinent personal information are then inputted into the registry’s database for further monitoring. This certification is needed and presented to the local dispensary before one can make a purchase.

Medical marijuana and Children

In some states where medical marijuana is legal, it can be also applied for children in need of medical marijuana aid. Regulations will differ from state to state but the general rule is that the parent or guardian of the child in need should be the designated caregiver and representative of the child. In some states, some regulations need at least 2 doctors’ certifications before they can apply to the local marijuana dispensary. Not all qualifying conditions of adults apply to children. The main conditions in which a child may apply for a registry certification are cancer, epilepsy, muscle spasms, and terminal conditions. Also, children and adolescents with life-debilitating or threatening conditions may apply with the local registry. Once a child certification is provided, the parents need to be the ones to purchase medical marijuana as stated in the physician’s prescription.

The doors have been finally opened and it won’t be long that children with qualifying conditions can now opt to use medical cannabis for their further treatment!
